Herb Garden Baking

Written by Abbey Jacobs, Samford University Dietetic Intern

Herbs are an easy way to get in some extra leafy greens while adding some delicious flavor to your dishes! Whether you are new to herbs or have been an herb-fanatic for years, you will love these easy and delicious snack recipes to try with your kiddos.

There are many different types of herbs you can incorporate from your garden. Here are the most common ones: basil, cilantro, oregano, parley, sage, dill, thyme, rosemary, chives, and bay leaves.

A good thing to keep in mind when working with herbs is that they are very versatile. For example, if a recipe calls for parsley and you only have basil, use basil! The taste may not be exactly the same, but since these are both Italian spices, the basil will still complement the dish well. Baking is all about having fun, so don't be afraid to branch out from the recipe. The main thing is to grow your experiences and engage with your Itty Bitty Bakers. Let’s look at some recipes!

YUM! This recipe uses rosemary and thyme. You can also use something like ranch dressing or marinara sauce to dip them in. If your Itty Bitty Bakers are not too thrilled to try goat cheese a good substitution can be mozzarella cheese. But you never know, they could always surprise you and themselves with their tastebuds!

This recipe calls for either rosemary or parsley, whichever you prefer or have in your little herb garden! I can imagine this snack with a creamy dill-ranch dressing. Makes my mouth water!

This recipe incorporates basil (hence the name!) and is a great grab-and-go snack option that could be prepped at the beginning of a busy week. The mixture of tomato and basil is always such a delicious combo!
