The Profile of an Itty Bitty Baker

Updated: Oct 20

As the owner of Itty Bitty Bakers, I've been asked the following questions, in some form or another, by parents as they consider signing up their child for a baking class:

  • "Who goes to your classes?"

  • "What types of kids go to your classes?"

  • "What do kids like about your baking classes?"

  • "What is a typical student profile?"

I love these questions because they allow me to explain who our baking classes appeal to and why. What is the profile of an Itty Bitty Baker? Glad you asked!

Yes, I do see a common thread in the type of kid who goes to baking classes. There are several common characteristics of our Itty Bitty Bakers students. If you'll allow the generalizations, I'll explain the types of kids we see in class and maybe you can determine if our classes are right for your child.

WE HAVE CREATIVE KIDS & TECH KIDS

Two smiling kids in aprons stand by a mixer on a granite counter in a kitchen. One wears a cap; their aprons read "Itty Bitty Bakers."
Two of our regular bakers. Their hobbies also include drawing and LEGOS.

A large part of our customer base is creative kids. These are kids who like to make and create with their hands. Their other interests are things like painting, drawing, LEGOS, or other building activities.

I'll use my son as an example - he loves technology, his tablet in particular. Can't live without it! One thing I find him doing on his tablet is building things. He has all kinds of apps for creating buildings, scenic lands, and even smoothies! (Yes, there's an app for that.)

What may seem like a kid who just likes technology, is actually a kid who likes to make, create, and build. Baking does just that. It is the process of assembling raw ingredients and putting them together into a finished product. So, if kids like technology, and even gaming, they often like baking as well.

WE HAVE WELL-ROUNDED KIDS

Our business manager, Amy Jones, said a few years ago that she liked to put her daughter Mia into two types of classes: 1) classes for her mind and 2) classes for her body. Mia started baking classes for her mind and ballet for her body when she was three-years old.

Like Mia, kids who come to our baking classes also play sports and take music lessons. Their parents are looking to provide a variety of extra-curricular activities in order to grow well-rounded kids.

WE HAVE BAKING ENTHUSIAST KIDS

Many children who come to our baking classes watch TV shows about cooking and baking. They dream of going on competition shows like, Food Network's Kids Baking Championship and are the kids who enter our Kids Christmas Cookie Bake Off each year. So, we see a lot of kids who already have baking as a hobby and want to make friends with others like them. Or, they simply want to improve their skills and learn new things in the world of baking.

An added bonus is that baking is a hobby and a pastime they can continue throughout their lives. Kids who come to baking classes become life-long baking enthusiasts.

WE HAVE HIGHLY ACADEMIC KIDS OR THOSE NEEDING HELP IN ACADEMICS

Math and science are always part of the package when it comes to baking. Kids who love these things often love baking because they can use their knowledge in a practical way and also learn more in these areas.

Three people smile and shake hands. Text lists 4 reasons for baking classes enhancing skills. "Back to School Edition" text below.

Inversely, parents with kids who struggle in math and science will often send their kids to baking classes. They know that in baking class their kids will see how principles learned in school can be applied in a real world setting. In our classes, kids see that academics like math and science are fun and useful.

Summary

In conclusion, if your child is the creative type, the techy type, the well-rounded type, the obsessed with baking type, or the type of kid who needs an academic challenge - they fit the profile! We would love to have them in an Itty Bitty Bakers class.

Has your child ever tried a baking class? Share in the comments why. We'd love to have more insight into this topic.
