Recipes to Make with Kids: Heart-Shaped Hand Pies

Updated: Nov 4

Prepare for an exciting "snacktivity" filled with fun and creativity! This recipe for Heart-Shaped Hand Pies is great to make with kids of all ages. And there are endless possibilities when it comes to variations — try different pie filling flavors and various cookie cutter shapes. Today, my son Luke and I chose blueberry pie filling and heart-shapes.

Heart-shaped pastry on a white plate, wooden table background. Nearby, a can reads "berry." Cozy kitchen vibe with a checkered cloth.

This is a great treat to make all throughout the year, but the heart shape is especially sweet at Valentine's Day.

What's a hand pie? Pretty much the same thing as a Pop Tart!

Hand Pies Recipe

Ingredients:

1 9-inch ready to bake pie crust

1 can pie filling (any flavor)

1 egg

Granulated or sanding sugar for sprinkling on top

Directions:

  1. Unroll pie crust onto a piece of parchment paper.

  2. Cut out heart shapes (any size).

  3. Spoon pie filling onto half of the shapes leaving the edges bare.

  4. Place the remaining shapes on top and crimp edges with a fork to seal closed.

  5. Brush beaten egg over the top of each pie and generously sprinkle with sugar.

  6. Prick the top of each pie with a fork in an X shape to vent.

  7. Transfer parchment paper to a large cookie sheet.

  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 min or until golden brown.

My 5 year old son was able to make these with mainly verbal directions from me. This recpie is something even little ones can take pride in doing on their own.
